Getting Started with Oppy
Welcome to Oppy — the platform for building AI employees that can talk, text, email, and chat on behalf of your business. This guide walks you through everything from your first login to your first live conversation.
What is Oppy?
Oppy lets you create AI-powered employees (called Oppies) that communicate with your customers through:
- Phone calls — real-time voice conversations with natural-sounding AI
- SMS/Text messages — instant text-based follow-up and nurturing
- Email — professional emails with custom signatures
- Web chat — embeddable chat widget for your website
Each Oppy has its own phone number, email address, personality, and knowledge base. Think of it as hiring a tireless team member who knows your business inside and out.
Your First 15 Minutes
Step 1: Create Your Account
After receiving your invite link, you’ll verify your phone number and set up your account. Your account automatically comes with an Account Concierge (also called “Smooth Operator”) — a floating AI assistant in the bottom-right corner of your dashboard that helps you manage everything.
Step 2: Create Your First Oppy
Click “Create Your First Oppy” or use the setup wizard. You’ll be asked to:
- Name your Oppy — Pick a name or choose from suggestions. This is what customers will see.
- Choose an avatar — Select from AI-generated headshots or upload your own photo. Use the refresh icon to generate more options. You can filter by gender.
- Pick a role — Sales assistant, lead qualifier, receptionist, etc. This is mostly a label — the real behavior comes from the prompt.
- Describe what it should do — In plain language, tell it what you want. Example: “Qualify inbound leads from our website. Ask about their budget, timeline, and property preferences. Book qualified leads on my calendar.”
- Add your website — Paste your website URL so the Oppy can crawl it and learn about your business automatically.
- Choose a voice — If you want phone capabilities, pick a voice. Preview each one by clicking. Popular options include Gavin (male) and Linda (female).
- Get a phone number — Search by area code to find a local number.
Step 3: Test It Out
Once created, you can immediately:
- Call the phone number and have a conversation
- Visit the live page (Share > View Live Page) and chat via web
-
Email the Oppy at its
@open.oppy.proaddress - Text the phone number (once SMS provisioning completes — typically 1-2 weeks)
Step 4: Share It
Go to the Share section to get:
- Live page URL — a public chat page for your Oppy
- QR codes — for print marketing, business cards, trade shows
- Embed code — JavaScript snippet to add the chat widget to your website
- Phone number — for voice calls and SMS
- Email address — for email communications

Pro tip: You can click and drag the concierge icon anywhere on screen if it’s in the way.
Key Concepts
The Prompt
Every Oppy has a prompt (also called system message) — this is like a job description. It tells the AI:
- Who it is and what company it represents
- What goals it should pursue (book demos, qualify leads, provide support)
- What rules to follow (never discuss pricing, always get an email address)
- How to handle specific scenarios
You can edit the prompt directly, or ask the Account Concierge to update it for you based on natural language instructions.
Needs Attention
When a conversation requires human intervention — either because a lead is qualified or because something went wrong — the Oppy flags it as “Needs Attention”. This:
- Changes the conversation status
- Tags the conversation and contact
- Emails the configured admin(s)
- Can post to a Slack channel
Follow-Up
Oppies can automatically follow up with contacts on a schedule. You can configure:
- Fixed intervals (e.g., every 3 days)
- AI-determined timing (analyzes the conversation to pick the best moment)
- Business hours and weekend rules
- Maximum number of attempts
Knowledge Bases
Your Oppy’s brain. Add websites, documents, or manual entries. The AI searches this knowledge when answering questions. You can have multiple knowledge bases and assign different ones to different Oppies.
Common First Actions
| What You Want | How To Do It |
|---|---|
| Change what the Oppy says | Edit the prompt directly, or tell the Account Concierge |
| Put the Oppy on your website | Go to Share > Embed Widget > Copy the code |
| Get notified when a lead is ready | Add your email as a Manager in the Oppy settings |
| Connect Follow Up Boss | Go to Integrations > Enter your Owner API key |
| Test the voice | Call the Oppy’s phone number from your cell |
| Add knowledge | Go to Knowledge Bases > Add URL or create entries |
| See what’s happening | Check the Conversations page for live activity |
What NOT to Worry About
How Fast Things Are Moving
The AI models upgrade frequently — GPT 4.1 → GPT 5.2 → GPT 5.4 all happened within weeks. Each upgrade makes your Oppy significantly smarter at following instructions and handling nuanced conversations, with zero effort from you. Your existing prompts just work better automatically.
- Restarting after changes: The AI picks up prompt changes immediately. No restart needed.
- Breaking it: You can’t really break your Oppy. The AI is smart enough to handle most situations gracefully. If something goes wrong, it flags the conversation for human attention.
- Training it perfectly first: Start simple. Launch with basic instructions and refine based on real conversations. The AI already knows a lot from your website and general knowledge (GPT 5.4 has trained on the entire internet up to October 2025).
- Technical setup: We handle phone provisioning, email setup, and compliance behind the scenes.
Tips From Usage
Example: In a well-configured website chat, visitors can stay engaged for a long back-and-forth conversation without leaving the site. The Oppy can gather preferences, answer detailed follow-up questions, and keep the exchange useful all the way through.
Another example: At a trade show, even limited distribution can still drive meaningful engagement through a live page or QR code. The main takeaway is that the Oppy can handle unexpected questions gracefully while still keeping the conversation productive.
- Test as a stranger — Visit the live page and pretend you’re a cold lead. See how the Oppy responds before going live.
- Review real conversations — After a few days, look at actual conversations and note anything you’d want the Oppy to handle differently.
- Use the Account Concierge — Instead of manually editing prompts, paste a conversation link into the concierge and say “I didn’t like how it responded here. Can you fix the prompt?”
- Start conservative — Set needs_attention to trigger early. As you gain confidence, gradually let the AI handle more.
- Layer complexity — Don’t try to set up everything at once. Start with web chat, then add phone, then follow-up, then integrations.
